New Standard for Bumpers

The new AZT bumper test was developed in conjunction with an international working group from RCAR under the aegis of AZT and will be known in future as the RCAR Bumper Test.

"The AZT crash repair test has established the basis for achieving good deformation behavior. Our objective must be for the bumpers of both vehicles that are in a crash to engage to prevent overriding or underriding into the vehicle structure," says Dr. Christoph Lauterwasser, Managing Director of the Allianz Center for Technology. "The bumper test has been required in addition to the usual type classification test for all new vehicles coming onto the market since January 1, 2010. Depending on the result, the insurance classification can change by up to two classes."

The AZT crash repair test was submitted to the Research Council for Automobile Repairs, an international umbrella organization, back in 1999, where it was adopted as an international standard. It was further developed there under the name RCAR Test. The new AZT bumper test was developed in conjunction with an international working group from RCAR under the aegis of AZT and will be known in future as the RCAR Bumper Test.
