The DAX® index measures the performance of German shares. The constituents are the 30 German companies with the highest market capitalization based on their free float. The base date is December 31, 1987 and the starting value 1000 points.
The weighting is based on the free float market capitalization, i.e. on the freely tradable shares only and not on the entire market value. The non-free float is owned by major, long-term oriented, shareholders who hold at least 5% of the share capital; the latter is not taken into consideration in the weighting. The non-free float also includes treasury shares, i.e. shares held by the company itself, irrespective of the size of the shareholding.
