“A different disaster”

Emergency walls, quick responses and clear information. Czechs have been hit hard by the flooding this year, and even Allianz offices were affected in many places, but good preparation and reaction have helped them avoid the worst. Allianz board member Manual Bauer praised their work while in Prague on June 13.

The Vltava River reached its high-water mark on June 3rd, and then the mass of water rolled on, flooding towns and villages as it went. As in other parts of Europe, emergency teams and normal citizens reacted to save what they could.

“We all remember 2002, but this is a different disaster,” said Manuel Bauer, member of the Board of Management of Allianz SE who manages the entire central Europe region. On a tour of Prague, he saw first hand how measures taken worked to prevent the massive flooding that had happened 11 years before. “It is remarkable to see how well the city and the country have dealt with the floods this year,” he continued.

This did not mean everyone had dry feet. The Allianz head office in Prague itself had a flooded garage. In the countryside, Allianz staff documented on video emergency workers up to their knees going from house to house and making sure people were safe.

“When the rains became severe, we established a crisis committee to handle both our own risks and those of our customers,” said Bauer. “The local staff here have been great: responsive and friendly.”

“Other organizations, both public and private, also generally approached the flood in the same systematic way,” commented Jakub Strnad, CEO of Allianz in the Czech Republic. “That, and the measures our country has put in place in recent years have really paid off this time.”

Several villages remain under water, but the situation is under control. Allianz staff is documenting the damage, often not the normal way by foot but rather by boat. One claims adjuster reports, “In one village, we were paddling our boat over the main square between a chapel and a bus stop, and we ran into some catfish!”

Throughout the emergency, Allianz in the Czech Republic focused its attention on quick and effective assistance to clients. In the most affected areas, Allianz brought in specialists from regions that were not affected by the floods for more support. Some of customers who were visited had even already installed drying machines, a sign that people are bringing things back to normal.

The waters remain high in many places, and claims continue to be reported. Nonetheless, the overall mood, as Jakub Strnad says, “was calm and well organized with a lot of solidarity.”
