Making a world of difference

As extreme weather and catastrophic events become more frequent and devastating, the call for solidarity and collective action grows stronger. In these challenging times, we are reminded that while natural disasters may tear communities apart, the resilience of people and the power of unity can bring them back together.

In moments of profound loss, it is the strength of people – sharing resources, offering support, and working toward a common goal – that makes recovery possible. Over the past two years, we have seen countless examples of what people can achieve in groups, through alliances, and across sectors  when the come together to face a world of increasing uncertainty. From immediate aid to long-term recovery efforts, these collective actions have rebuilt lives and laid the groundwork for a more resilient future.

At Allianz, we act swiftly and decisively when natural disasters strike, cutting through bureaucracy to deliver impactful assistance to customers and affected communities. Our responsibility extends beyond immediate relief; through partnerships and innovative programs, we work to ensure communities recover and thrive.

Allianz employees are central to these efforts. Their dedication has amplified the impact of every initiative. By matching employee donations and fostering collaborations with NGOs and local governments, Allianz ensures that resources are directed where they are needed most, helping communities recover and prepare for a more resilient future.

In November, heavy rains, and flooding caused catastrophic damage across eastern Spain. With over 220 lives lost and widespread property damage, it was one of the deadliest floods in the country’s modern history.

By leveraging digital damage assessment tools, Allianz expedited claims and mobilized a network of experts for rapid intervention. Support offices were established for displaced agents, and our teams worked tirelessly, including weekends, to assist clients.

Allianz also contributed €500,000 to the Spanish Red Cross. An additional €500,000 was allocated to match employee and partner donations to the Red Cross Society’s Disaster Response Fund and local disaster prevention initiatives.

Through partnerships with NGOs, Allianz will support flood-resilience programs focusing on reforestation, flood warning systems and economic upskilling for vulnerable groups. These initiatives provided immediate relief while fostering long-term disaster preparedness.

In mid-September 2024, Central Europe suffered extreme flooding. Allianz provided swift claims services, deploying additional loss adjusters, and delivering drying equipment to affected areas. Up to  €1.5 million was donated to the Red Cross and other relief organizations, ensuring that funds reached Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic, where they were needed most.

In collaboration with the Austrian Red Cross, Allianz supported clean-up efforts, while in the Czech Republic, funds were allocated to restore 2000 wells for safe drinking water. In Poland, emergency relief items, such as 2,500 beds and 500 blankets, were distributed to displaced families.

When severe flooding devastated southern Germany in June, Allianz responded by deploying specialist claims units and agencies to assist customers on the ground. Approximately 6,700 additional drying devices were transported to affected regions, and 600 Allianz loss assessors and experts worked to evaluate damage, arrange repairs, and process advance payments. Our Craftsmen Service* provided rapid support to policyholders needing professional repairs, ensuring swift recovery.

Allianz donated €1 million to local fire departments, rescue organizations and technical relief services while matching employee donations of up to €500,000, which were directed to the Red Cross to enhance relief and recovery efforts. An internal campaign allowed employees affected by the floods to take paid leave to manage personal recovery.

In February 2023, one of the most devastating earthquakes in recent history struck Türkiye and Syria. Allianz raised €6 million for recovery and rebuilding efforts, supporting initiatives such as hygiene and water sanitation through UNICEF and school repairs through the Zeltschule Foundation.

Long-term recovery programs, including youth resilience initiatives, have empowered affected communities, such as the Caring for Girls initiative, which provides foster care, housing and educational opportunities for girls affected by the earthquake, offering them scholarships and future career paths.

Additionally, the Nationwide Earthquake Awareness Program between Allianz Teknik and the Turkish Education Volunteers Foundation (TEGV) continues to train children across 34 provinces in disaster preparedness with the goal of reaching 145,000.

Our responsibility goes beyond immediate relief. Through swift action and effective support, Allianz builds societal resilience by fostering partnerships and supporting programs that ensure communities can recover and thrive. Allianz employees are central to all these efforts, and their dedication to supporting affected communities has amplified the impact of each initiative through the power of unity.

For this reason, Allianz recently launched the " Power of Unity" to highlight the role of collaboration in addressing challenges such as political polarization, economic uncertainty and eroding social trust. The program seeks to bridge divides and restore confidence in societal institutions through research, dialogue and learning initiatives. Drawing from insights like the Allianz Social Resilience Index 2024, the program fosters unity to create a more secure and prosperous future for all.

“A more united world is a more prosperous world. Polarization slows economic growth and threatens our customers’ sense of security and optimism,” said Oliver Bäte, Chief Executive Officer of Allianz SE. “To secure their future, Allianz will combine forces with willing partners for action, demonstrating that leaders can work successfully together to solve the problems that matter most to people.”
