German culture award Deutscher Kulturförderpreis goes to the Allianz Cultural Foundation in Berlin

The Culture Committee for German Business in the Federation of German Industries (BDI) announced the winners of the Deutscher Kulturförderpreis 2014 at an award ceremony. For the second time the German Business culture award went to the Allianz Cultural Foundation for its project "The White Sea - Literature on the Mediterranean" (Das Weiße Meer – Literaturen rund um das Mittelmeer).

Since 2012, together with the Literary Colloquium Berlin, the Allianz Cultural Foundation has been organizing a lecture series featuring readings, discussions and workshops with journalists, authors, historians and representatives of civil society from countries of the Mediterranean cultural region. "The White Sea" - Arabic for the 'Mediterranean' – symbolizes the historic association of harbor towns around the Mediterranean. "Together with our authors from a variety of countries we travel ancient trade routes that were always also used to foster cultural exchange. Without culture there can be no sustainable economy and without a flourishing economy there can be no culture. We want to make people aware of this fact," says Michael M. Thoss, Managing Director of the Cultural Foundation who initiated the project.

"No trust without equality"

Events in Mediterranean towns such as Trieste, Tirana, Thessaloniki and Alexandria are each followed up with a complementary event in Berlin. The format and subject-matter of the meetings are jointly agreed with local cooperation partners. "We believe in equality in cooperation," explains Thoss. "Without equality there can be no mutual trust, and in this region we need trust more than ever before."

Werner Zedelius, the new head of the board of trustees of the Allianz Cultural Foundation, accepted the award from German television presenter Barbara Hahlweg. When asked about what Allianz and its Cultural Foundation have in common, he replied: "We share the same strategic approach. Allianz makes long-term investments for the future of its stakeholders; the Foundation invests in sustainable cultural and educational projects that aim to have an impact on society."

The Deutscher Kulturförderpreis has been awarded on an annual basis since 2006 by the Culture Committee for German Business in the Federation of German Industries (BDI), together with its partners Handelsblatt and Süddeutsche Zeitung, to companies who display outstanding commitment to the promotion of culture. The jury assesses projects from about 60 applicant companies using criteria such as innovation and creativity of the actual concepts, incorporation into the company, sustainability and cultural relevance.
