Making sense of the bewildering pension world

It is difficult to gain an overview of the worldwide pension landscape without becoming incredibly confused. There is no lack of information on individual countries, but comparing national systems can be challenging as they differ substantially – almost bewilderingly so – in form.

In this sense, the Global Pension Atlas 2011 attempts the impossible. This special edition of the award-winning magazine PROJECT M prepared by researchers of the Allianz Global Investors International Pensions team provides an overview of the state of the pension systems in 44 countries worldwide.

"It is fair to say that no other work provides an overview of the state of the worldwide pension landscape in such a systemic and graphical manner," says Brigitte Miksa, Head of International Pensions. "In this, we believe the Atlas is unique."

Pension adequacy and affordability is one of the most important social policy changes of our times. The way it is addressed will not only fundamentally affect state finances, it will also have a direct and deep impact on the lives of hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

The 32-page Atlas provides rich background material on developments within international pensions as they evolved after the wave of reforms of the 1990s and early years of this century. Analysis is carried out on trends within the three-pillar approach to pensions worldwide, as well as by region.

However, it is the two double-page maps that are at the heart of the publication. Presented in a colorful three-dimensional design, the maps (one global and one of the patchwork quilt that is Europe) provide an easy-to-understand overview of the global shift to defined contribution systems along with a timeline of funded pension reforms.
