Michael Heise, Allianz Chief Economist on Janet Yellen’s announcement that negative interest rates might be a possible reaction to the current economic situation.

Michael Heise, Chief economist of Allianz.

In recent years we have been over-reliant on central banks. We cannot expect economic activity to increase just by applying more of the same medicine that hasn’t been effective so far. The effort of central banks to create growth and jobs and push up inflation to two percent has not succeeded. Monetary policy does not address the root causes. To increase productivity and growth, we need a handoff to other policy areas. For example, to encourage companies to invest their cash, spread technological innovation and education, governments should put more effort into improving the investment climate by implementing product and labor market reforms. Making interest rates negative will not solve the problem.

Failure to manage the earth’s natural resources or “natural capital” has consequences that extend beyond direct effects on the environment. For businesses, it can also bring new interruption and liability scenarios which can wipe out profits and impact business models, as resource scarcity, regulatory action and pressure from communities and wider society grows, warns AGCS in a new report.

FIFA World Cup 2018: Ready to Play

Allianz-FIFA World Cup 2018: Ready to Play
Jun 12, 2018 | Allianz SE

Before the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia, one essential item needs to be in position – and it’s not the ball. Big or small, international or local, sporting events have an even bigger supporter - insurance. In fact, you can call it the ‘enabler’. “Without insurance there would be no World Cup, no Olympics or little organized competitive sport at all,” says Michael Furtschegger, Head of Entertainment International at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS). “For, few would take on the risk required to stage an event, particularly one the size of the World Cup.”
