Allianz commemorates its 125th anniversary

In 2015 Allianz is looking back on its 125-year history: on February 5, 1890 the company was entered into the trade register for the first time. Originally starting as a German transport insurer, Allianz has developed over the years into the globally active financial services provider that it is today. The past 125 years have not just seen changes in the needs of retail and corporate customers, but also in the societal frameworks in the different countries. These changes have had a substantial influence on Allianz's development. The monograph “Allianz. History of a Company 1890-2015", which will be released at the end of February by the publishing house C.H. Beck, offers a comprehensive insight into the individual eras and the company's international expansion.

 

Focusing on questions for the future

 

The activities around Allianz's 125th anniversary predominantly center on what the future has in store, however: megatrends such as demographic development and climate change and their effects are already shaping the world today, yet long-term and sustainable solutions can only be developed in an interconnected world by entering into dialog with others. Michael Diekmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Allianz SE, explains: "We are convinced that a fact-based, constructive dialog will help both society and ourselves to overcome the diverse challenges posed by the future."

 

Allianz wants to make its contribution to this process and spark a dialog across all interest groups. Another Allianz publication is being released against this backdrop.

 

The compendium entitled “Our world and us” contains articles from renowned international academics and internal Allianz experts. They investigate the impact that the megatrends of demographic and climate change will have on the lives of the generations to come. These analyses are not limited to fascinating, if sometimes worrying, facts. Rather, they offer insightful analyses, projections for the future and propose specific solutions.

 

The findings form the basis for two public dialog events with international representatives from the fields of politics, academia, economics and society. The events will take place today (February 4) in Berlin and on April 21 in Munich, and will focus on the topics of demography and climate change respectively.

 

Comprehensive dialog gives rise to viable solutions

 

In addition, Allianz will be holding internal discussion forums at 20 locations worldwide - from Vienna to Pune, Europe through America to Asia. All employees globally are invited to contribute their knowledge and questions in active exchange with experts. The main objective here is to better understand the ramifications of the often abstract megatrends and place them in a local context: what do "global warming" and "ageing society" mean for the people and societies of each country? What kinds of challenges and issues will these trends give rise to for Allianz' customers in individual markets? And what solutions can Allianz contribute towards safeguarding the future as a strong financial community and responsible partner?

 

Practical priorities for the future

 

Allianz also wants to set concrete priorities whose impacts will last beyond the year of its anniversary. As part of this action, funding for the Allianz Environmental Foundation and Allianz Cultural Foundation will be increased by a total of 12.5 million euros. These funds will be invested in hands-on projects in particular, with the aim of addressing inter-generational cooperation, the integration of marginal groups into society, as well as education and value-related issues.

 

In addition, Allianz is extending its cooperation with the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin, by providing a total of 125 scholarships. "These scholarships for study in Berlin are to go to talented young people from all over the world who would otherwise be unable to afford this kind of training under the existing circumstances", Diekmann explains.

 

Finally, from the summer onwards, events will take place in the five Allianz-branded stadiums across the globe for employees, families and friends, along with customers and business partners. The proceeds from these events will be used to fund projects to help children.
