Allianz top-ranked in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Rating

Dow Jones Indexes and sustainability investment group SAM published the results of their 2011 annual review for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes on September 8. In this latest review, Allianz not only retained its top position among the sustainability leaders in our industry but also improved its score by 2 points to 81, placing it head-to-head with the insurance "Super Sector Leader".

"We have been recognized for our sustainability performance for a number of years," , says Daniel Dirks, Head of Allianz4Good, Allianz Group's center of competence for corporate responsibility and sustainable development. "Being rated as one of the sustainability leaders in our industry only vindicates that sustainability really is a part of what we do at Allianz. It is core to our business strategy."

Allianz is especially recognized as leading the industry in:

  • Access to insurance: providing insurance to low-income households and contributing to strengthen local insurance systems; - Allianz offers a variety of microinsurance products and has more than four million customers, especially in Africa and Asia
  • Brand management: structured approach to manage the brand at a strategic level and the high degree of alignment of our brand management strategy with the sustainability positioning – At the heart of the Allianz "One" campaign is encouraging dialogue and sharing knowledge and expertise among Allianz customers, employees and all other stakeholders
  • Risk detection: Early detection of environmental/ social/ ethical risks in product development - Allianz Group has already developed around 70 products and services that help mitigate climate change or take its environmental impact into account. The solutions range from asset management to insurance and assistance

"2010 was one of the most successful years in our history – and one that featured a number of significant advances in the environmental and social fields as well as in corporate governance," adds Dirks, "For example, we achieved our CO2 reduction target two years ahead of schedule. Also our financial literacy program My Finance Coach was recognized as an official project of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development – a particular validation of the Group's social engagement."

Allianz has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2000 with excellent ranking positions over the past years. Its achievements have also been recognized by a number of leading sustainability rating agencies.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide, and provide asset managers with reliable and objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios. Companies included in the DJSI must meet stringent criteria. The annual review of the DJSI family is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices. It accounts for general as well as industry specific sustainability criteria for each of the analyzed 57 sectors which roll up into 19 Super Sectors.
