Allianz' environmental, social and corporate governance performance

Access to finance, climate change, demographic change, digitalization and the stability of financial markets – global issues that are not only becoming increasingly important but also particularly relevant to clients and Allianz' sustainable business success as they are closely linked to its core business. Successfully meeting these challenges requires future-oriented solutions. Allianz now has more than 4 million microinsurance customers in eight countries of Africa, Asia and South America; has invested more than 1 billion euros in 30 wind and solar parks; and is focusing on developing holistic financial solutions for aging societies. What's more, digitalized tools have been integrated into all business areas to enhance customer convenience and improve process efficiency. At the same time, Allianz fully supports efforts to enhance financial stability and create a new financial architecture.

2010 was one of the most successful years in Allianz' 120-year history – and one that featured a number of significant advances in the environmental and social fields as well as in corporate governance:

  • Economic performance: In 2010, total revenues exceeded 100 billion euros with an operating profit of 8 billion euros.
  • Environmental record: Allianz achieved its target of reducing its CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent of the 2006 levels two years ahead of schedule.
  • Social engagement: The fact that My Finance Coach, Allianz' lighthouse financial literacy program, was recognized as an official project of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development was a particular validation of the Group's social engagement.
  • Corporate governance: Allianz' Group-wide Anti-Corruption Program now covers its business partners.

Through its engagement in the environmental, social and governance field Allianz is contributing proactively to the kind of progress that brings genuine advances in society, as Allianz SE's CEO Michael Diekmann points out: "Sustainability is part of Allianz' DNA as an insurer. Our achievements have been recognized by the leading sustainability rating agencies. The real benchmark, however, lies in continuing to meet the changing needs of our customers. These needs, the way in which they change in response to the five global issues, and our business success form a triangle of sustainability to which we align our company and its management."
