Allianz Arena to be illuminated in green

Munich landmark to become part of the global "Greening" campaign. The lighting will begin on March 17 at 19.00 CET

What do the Allianz Arena, the Egyptian pyramids and the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro have in common? They all rank among the global landmarks that will be illuminated in green on St. Patrick’s Day. Ireland is once again organizing its global "Greening" campaign in 2013 - and cities across the world will be taking part. Pisa, for example, has decided to illuminate the leaning tower in green. The London Eye is also set to be lit up in green on March 17. At the same time, Munich, like many cities across the globe, will be hosting various St. Patrick’s Day events organized by the local Irish community.

Following approvals with those responsible for the Allianz Arena and the public authorities, Munich's participation has been confirmed: the Allianz Arena, which normally shines in white, red or blue, will exceptionally be illuminated in green.

"We think it's great that the Allianz Arena will be in the same league as buildings and sights as illustrious as the Sydney Opera House or the Niagara Falls. This is why we gave a “green light” to this project,” said Christian Deuringer, Head of Brand Management at Allianz SE.

This unique lighting event will be clearly visible from the city starting at 7 PM CET on March 17. In order to cast the Allianz Arena in a vibrant shade of green, a lighting team of six experts will be using special lighting technology: LED floodlights will be set up in 12 locations on the west side of the "Esplanade" around the east side of the Allianz Arena. The remodeling of the 1,000 illuminated panels of the stadium would have been too cumbersome for a one-off event. In order to keep energy consumption to a minimum, the lights will be turned off again after a few hours.

"We are proud to wear the green of Ireland. Such is the warmth and openness that our rich culture of creativity and generosity engenders that people from all corners of the globe feel proud to wear the green of Ireland. And, like Allianz, we take delight in celebrating a truly unique day that will light up the entire world,” said Brendan Murphy, CEO of Allianz Ireland. Based in Dublin, Allianz Ireland employs over 1,400 people.

Allianz is a long-standing partner of the Allianz Arena and FC Bayern München. The Allianz Arena was opened in May 2005 as one of the most modern football stadiums in the world. One year later, it was the stage for six World Cup football matches, including the semi-final, and hosted the UEFA Champions League Final in May 2012. Around 71,000 fans can watch a game of football in the Allianz Arena: to date, more than 300 matches have taken place, attracting a total audience of more than 17 million. The Allianz Arena is home to both FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München. The Allianz Arena is now one of Bavaria's most visited landmarks: 26 million visitors have already made their way to the Arena for football matches or the Allianz Arena tour. Every summer an international group of teenagers comes to the “Allianz Junior Football Camp” in Munich to train with FC Bayern’s youth coaches and to visit the famous stadium.

Allianz deepened its commitment to football in 2012. The Allianz Family of Stadiums now includes the “Allianz Stadium” in Sydney, the “Allianz Park” rugby stadium in London and the “Allianz Riviera” in Nice, which is still under construction. However, only the flagship stadium in Munich will be illuminated in green for St. Patrick’s Day.
