Increasing number of traffic victims worldwide is alarming

Allianz, the world's largest car insurer with more than 50 million insured vehicles, promotes road safety initiatives and activities worldwide. The programs range from driver training, to children's activities, to research conducted about various road safety aspects and the diffusion of these findings.

The current Global Status Report of the World Health Organization (WHO) points out that 1.3 million people get killed in road accidents every year. Children, pedestrians, cyclists and the elderly are among the most vulnerable road users. The organization stresses the fact that if this trend continues, road crashes will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030.

"A reduction in the number of victims of road accidents can only be achieved with a high level of awareness of traffic risks, sustained commitment to road safety and innovative strategies," says Christoph Lauterwasser, Managing Director of the Allianz Center for Technology (AZT Automotive). For over 40 years Allianz has been actively engaged in road safety with its own in-house research center for automotive expertise. The AZT has been providing successful risk management, as well as accident and damage research, and contributed to many safety developments including the mandatory introduction of the safety belt in Germany.

"Given the daunting global statistics, accident prevention and road safety are extremely important. Allianz plays an active role as a risk management partner for its customers and is a leader and innovator in the realm of accident prevention and road safety," says Daniel Dirks, Head of Allianz4Good.

For example, one of Allianz’s fields of activity is the support of children's safety as road users. Allianz Hungary promotes a children's road safety park to show, explain and practise the rules of road traffic.

Other Allianz entities offer driver trainings to different target groups. For example, Fireman's Fund USA provides training classes and driver quizzes to pizza delivery businesses, whereas Allianz Netherlands focuses on checking truck drivers manoeuvres.

Some road safety actions are included in Allianz products and services. For instance, the Czech Republic offers a ranking of the most dangerous district and region roads in terms of casualties and injuries, while Allianz Turkey provides a Risk Bulletin to brief traffic participants about winter weather conditions.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is held on the third Sunday of November each year. It is a day to remember those who died or were injured in road crashes and the plight of their loved ones who must cope with the consequences of their deaths or injuries.

This year, the UN General Assembly declared the first-ever "Decade of Action for Road Safety", in which Allianz is the first partner.
