Allianz donates towards Türkiye-Syria earthquake relief

An earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck Türkiye and Syria at 04:17 am local time on Monday, killing over 4,300 people* and injuring thousands. In Türkiye alone, at least 1,498 people have died and several thousands have been injured, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD). In neighboring Syria, at least 820 have died. Monday’s earthquake, one of the strongest to hit the region in a century, sent tremors as far away as Lebanon and Israel.

In response to this disaster, Allianz Group is contributing to the Red Cross Society through its Disaster Response fund. Funds will be distributed to Turkish and Syrian Red Crescents for relief work in the impacted areas on both sides of the border. Clinics and health facilities are already at the limit, numerous buildings and roads have been destroyed, even while rescue and emergency medical teams are working to extricate people from under the rubble. Expert teams from the Turkish Red Crescent's civil protection team are providing blood supplies, essential relief supplies and warm meals for the local people in affected areas, while the Syrian Arab Red Crescent response teams are providing on-site first aid and conducting emergency medical evacuations.

The Red Cross Society is in continuous close contact with its sister societies in Türkiye and Syria to understand the local situation and humanitarian needs and after completion of a survey of the affected areas, it will use the funds towards search and rescue operations, provision of food parcels, family hygiene kits, shelter toolkits, tarpaulin sheets and kitchen sets.

The earthquake has expectedly affected employees in AZ Türkiye, which has already set up a fundraising link for contributions towards emergency response.
