Sustainability Report 2014: the journey continues

With the publication of our 14th Sustainability Report, we are presenting our Group’s progress in sustainable development. As an insurer and long-term investor, sustainability is an inherent part of our business. Our Report helps our stakeholders understand our approach.

Allianz has not just discovered sustainability recently. Our 125-year anniversary also marks a long sustainability journey. We are facing constant change as new trends develop and bring along new challenges – and opportunities.

“Missing trends on accelerating technological and social innovations is one of the biggest risks for a financial services provider like Allianz. It would harm our entrepreneurial ability to accompany change and to protect our future and that of our customers,” says Michael Diekmann, CEO of Allianz, pointing out that our understanding of sustainable development builds upon finding satisfying solutions for those challenges.

We recognize that our stakeholders see us from different perspectives: some see us as an insurer or investor, for others we are an international company or a global employer. Above all, we are a part of society. Regardless of which role we play, we take our environmental and social responsibility seriously.

As a company, we are protecting the environment by minimizing our own environmental impact. Our overall CO2 reduction, for example, now stands at 41.3 percent per employee since 2006. More than 150 “green” insurance solutions help our private and corporate customers to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Transparency is a key attribute of all our business operations and we treat our customers, employees and partners with integrity and honesty. That is why Allianz is recognized as being one of the world’s most transparent multinational companies, and takes a leading role in external compliance organizations.

As a committed corporate citizen, Allianz takes its role in society very seriously and we assist local communities in various ways. By seeking dialog with governments, we are contributing to solutions to economic and political challenges our stakeholders face. In 2014, we donated more than 20 million euros to social organizations and our employees are supporting social organizations through our employee volunteering programs.

To become an attractive employer, Allianz has developed a strong talent management approach. We are supporting women in leadership and promoting diversity and inclusion in our workforce. After all, financial services is a “people business”. We believe that the trust and engagement of our employees help us to provide better service to all our stakeholders.

As a sustainable insurer, we want to be a trusted partner for our customers which includes good underwriting practices and fair claims handling. Our microinsurance portfolio offers affordable insurance to low-income people in developing countries who would otherwise be left vulnerable to the risks in life such as death, illness, or loss of property due to natural disasters. By also investing in financial education in developed and developing countries, we make sure that our customers understand insurance and its benefits.

Allianz is one of the world’s largest investors. We seek sustainable investments over the long term and use our understanding of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues to reduce risk in our portfolios. We firmly believe that considering ESG factors in investment management – for our own as well as our customers’ assets – is not a short-term trend, but will fundamentally change business over time.
