Don't let thieves spoil your Jubilee weekend

Thieves feed off distraction and empty homes so leading property insurer, Allianz UK has issued brokers and customers with its top tips on how to make sure their possessions and properties are as secure as possible during this weekend's Jubilee festivities.

Many people will be taking part in local Jubilee parties or going away to enjoy the long Bank Holiday weekend and Allianz's own claims experience indicates that this weekend could be a bonanza period for thieves.

To help reduce the risk the insurer has issued a factsheet, which includes a range of preventative measures to take whilst policyholders are away over the long weekend, or even just out taking in part in local Jubilee celebrations.

Top tips include:

  • Never leave keys in the lock, hanging inside a letterbox or hidden outside the home
  • Leave living room or bedroom lights on if you are out for the evening
  • Don't leave expensive equipment in sheds - make sure it is securely locked away
  • Don't let strangers into your home unless they give you official proof of identity
  • Avoid leaving doors and windows open downstairs, even when you are at home.

Hannah Baker, community broker manager, Allianz Retail comments:  "Brokers can play an important part during this busy time by reminding customers of the importance of taking the necessary measures to protect their property against theft."
