The euro – 10 years old

The "9-year itch" proved to be a real test for the euro – from the debt crisis to debates about the disintegration of the eurozone. When the bells chime in 2012, the euro banknotes and coins will be celebrating their 10th birthday, although it would appear that virtually nobody is in the mood for a party.

Uncomfortable rethinking

Demographic change, in particular its rising life expectancy and sinking birth rates, needs to be met with fundamental and partly uncomfortable rethinking. We may be gaining valuable years to our lives but it remains to be seen how this prolonged retirement can be financed.

With a heavy heart

As far as the press is concerned, he's the "most important man in German life insurance": Maximilian Zimmerer, born in Düsseldorf, 53, married, doctor of law. For the past six years he has guided the fate of Germany's market leader Allianz Leben. He is now about to begin the next stage of his career: mid-2012 Zimmerer will join the Board of Management of Allianz SE.

A product of the East and the Midwest

Gary Bhojwani's career has taken him to various sides of the insurance business, from a start-up agency to a global organization, from turn-around cases to growing businesses, from property and casualty insurance to life insurance. On January 1, 2012, he will join the Allianz SE board, with responsibility for the US insurance operations.

A Rhinelander for Munich

His entry into the insurance industry was a bit of a fluke, but the fact that he's remained loyal to it for the past 25 years isn't. "Insurance is more exciting than it looks from the outside," says Dieter Wemmer. Allianz SE has now appointed the former CFO of Zurich Financial Services to its Board of Management, taking effect on January 1.

The Supervisory Board of Allianz SE has appointed Helga Jung to the Board of Management to take effect on January 1, 2012. She will be responsible for the insurance business in Spain, Portugal and Latin America, for Strategic Participations, Mergers and Acquisitions, plus Legal and Compliance.
