Paralympics

Since 2006, Allianz SE has been a proud partner of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and since 2011 the first "International Partner" of the IPC, a role that incorporates local co-operations with around ten National Paralympic Committees (NPCs). Looking back on the long-standing and mutually beneficial co-operation, Allianz and its partners have helped to foster public awareness and generate a greater interest in Paralympic Sport in general.

"There is a strong link that ties Allianz to the Paralympics,” says Werner Zedelius, member of the Board of Management of Allianz SE. “The topics of health, rehabilitation and reintegration after a casualty are part of our daily business and we understand that impairment is an issue that concerns all of us.“

Allianz is vocal in its support of the global Paralympic Movement and inspired by the extraordinary achievements of the athletes that are a part of it. The athletes’ passion for the sport, the ambitions to achieve their goals and the ability to believe in themselves are remarkable. Their motivation to strive for excellence in Paralympic Sports can serve as inspiration for all people, everywhere, regardless of physical impairment.

The IPC is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement. Its purpose is to organize the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games and to act as the International Federation for nine sports, supervising and coordinating World Championships and other competitions.

Sport for athletes with an impairment has existed for more than 100 years, but it was not until after World War II, that it was widely introduced. In 1944, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann opened a spinal injuries centre at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Great Britain and organized the first competition for wheelchair athletes which he named the Stoke Mandeville Games. In time, rehabilitation sport evolved to recreational sport and then to competitive sport.

  Facts & Figures

The Paralympic Movement

The Paralympic Movement is a global network of organizations brought together through their commitment to provide sporting opportunities for Para athletes and through the belief to contribute to a better world with equal opportunities for all individuals.

As a partner of the IPC and around ten NPCs, Allianz committed itself to supporting Paralympic Athletes preparing for the Paralympic Games and to promote the Paralympic movement, its goals and ideals.

Paralympic Games

The Paralympic Games are the biggest international multi-sport event for athletes with an impairment. The Paralympic Winter and Summer Games are held at the same venue immediately following the Olympic Games. The next Paralympic Winter Games are held in Sochi 2014 and the next Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Paralympic Sport

Paralympic Sport mostly does not differ from able-bodied sport. The main differnce is the classification of Paralympic athletes in multiple impairment categories and classes as well as the usage of the respective sport equipment. To find out more about Paralympic Sport take a look at our Information Graphics on the IPC website.

Paralympic Athletes

The most decorated athlete at Paralympic Games is currently Trischa Zorn with 55 medals at Paralympic Games from 1980 to 2004. Current top stars are amongst others Jonnie Peacock, Kelly Cartwright, Ellie Simmonds and Daniel Dias. Take a look at Allianz‘ athletes features.

National Paralympic Committees

National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) are national organizations recognized by the IPC as the sole representatives of athletes with an impairment from their respective countries. The IPC currently has around 170 NPCs, which are responsible for the entrance, management and team preparation for the Paralympic Games and other IPC-sanctioned competitions.

Allianz currently partners with NPCs in Croatia, Czech Republic, Ireland, Switzerland and more to follow shortly

  Branded Content

Allianz continues the successful production and distribution of Paralympic Sport Information Graphics with a new look and feel for more digital forms of usage.

By now, Allianz produced eight Information Graphics of Paralympic Summer Sport which cover Swimming, Wheelchair Racing, Throwing Events, Long Jump, Cycling, Wheelchair Basketball, Football 5-a-Side and Sprint.

The graphics include information about the sport itself, the sport equipment used as well as about classification. Additionally, a quote of an athlete gives an insight view of the technical side of each sport combined with his practical experience and motivation.

Besides the Information Graphics, Allianz has produced various videos called „Webisodes“ and „Features“.

The Webisodes‘ focus is on the personal story of the athlete and how he/she manages personal crisis, how sport changed his/her life as well as his/her advice for others.

The „Features“ are focusing on sharing knowledge. The athlete explains the sport, sport equipment, challenges and how he/she trains.

The videos include athletes Branimir Budetic (CRO), Cecilia Camellini (ITA), Duan Li (CHI), Jessica Galli (USA), Katrin Green (GER), Kelly Cartwright (AUS), Michael Teuber (GER), Esther Vergeer (NED), Marcel Hug (SUI), Orla Barry (IRL), Heinrich Popow (GER) and Sebastian Iwanow (GER).
