Allianz officially ventured into Malaysia in 2001 when it became the controlling shareholder of Allianz General Insurance Malaysia Berhad (now known as Allianz Malaysia Berhad) (“AGIM”). In 2007, the general insurance business of AGIM was transferred to its newly incorporated wholly-owned subsidiary, Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad (“AGIC”).
Following the completion of the transfer of general insurance business, AGIM changed its name to Allianz Malaysia Berhad (“AMB”) and became an investment holding company. In the same year, AMB also acquired Commerce Assurance Berhad (“CAB”), a general insurance company. It’s the intention of AMB to eventually merge the general insurance businesses of AGIC and CAB by end of 2008.
AMB is currently the holding company for both the life and the general insurance companies in Malaysia namely Allianz Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad (life insurance arm), AGIC and CAB (general insurance arms).
Business & Customer Focus
- AGIC is the third largest general insurer in Malaysia. The merging of businesses between AGIC and CAB will enable Allianz to become the second largest general insurer in Malaysia. AGIC and CAB offer a broad spectrum of services in personal lines, small to medium enterprise business and large industrial risks. . They are supported by a strong network of 55 integrated branches and approximately 8,000 agents located throughout East and West Malaysia. AGIC also has a 10 year-bancassurance agreement with CIMB Bank giving AGIC the opportunity to leverage and reach out to the bank's over-a-million-customer base
