Sustainable Products and Services

We believe that sustainable development (SD) is inherent to our business and is reflected in the products and services we provide for our customers. These range from groundbreaking catastrophe bonds to environmental car insurance and extended care for the elderly.
And we are constantly coming up with new ideas too, by continuously researching and developing new products across our core services of asset management, banking and insurance.

Sustainable Asset Management and Investment
Our commitment to sustainable development is demonstrated in part by our investment decisions. To date, total assets in Socially Responsible Investment account for 0.6% of our total assets under management.
Since 2005, we have invested over €350 million in renewable energy; a figure which is intended to rise to €500 million within the next year.
Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Funds
Allianz manages a number of regional and global SRI funds. The funds invest in companies that meet the required monetary, environmental and ethical criteria. To help promote academic research into SRI, AGI France has funded research into the long-term environmental and social consequences of companies’ actions through its work with the French Asset Management Association.
Global EcoTrends Fund
The global fund invests in renewable energy, environmental protection and water enhancement projects. Approximately 20% of the fund’s assets are invested in emerging economies. As of June 2008, £1590 million was under this fund’s management.
Sustainable Banking
Dresdner Bank has become an industry leader in carbon emissions trading and advisory services. Dresdner Bank is also financing biogas plants and has developed supporting risk assessment and evaluation tools for this evolving energy source.
Emissions Trading and Advisory Services
A company emitting more pollutants than is permitted must purchase emission certificates, and companies that emit less CO2 than their allocated amount can sell their certificates. Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein transacted the first trade in CO2 (according to the guidelines of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association) in June 2004, and continues to be an industry leader in the field.
Green Bond
In May 2007, Dresdner Kleinwort and the European Investment Bank (EIB) launched the Green Bond. It is expected to become the largest syndicated equity-index-linked bond ever launched. The Green Bond is linked to an index of companies with environmentally responsible practices, and revenues from the bond will be used to fund projects in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Sustainable Insurance
Our insurance products are diverse and range from health-related products, such as organ transplant support, to climate change products, such as reduced premium car insurance, and microinsurance policy initiatives in emerging nations.
Renewable Energy Insurance
Corporate insurance policies are available for property (e.g. fire) and engineering (e.g. machinery breakdown) coverage for renewable energy technologies.
Eco Bonus Car Insurance
In Austria, Allianz Elementar offers customers a 10% discount on their annual premium if they hold an annual public transport pass.
Recycled Parts in Vehicle Repair
Allianz UK has put a program in place to encourage policyholders, other vehicle insurers, car repairers and manufacturers to use recycled parts for vehicle repairs. An excess waiver is currently being developed for policyholders who agree to use recycled parts.
Catastrophe Bond
Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty have created the ‘cat bond’ to transfer the risk of earthquakes in North America and severe floods in the UK. The securities are issued by Blue Wings Ltd., and are part of a $1 billion program.
Microinsurance
Allianz has launched microinsurance projects in Indonesia, India, Colombia, Egypt and Senegal, with the help of experienced organizations such as UNDP, CARE International, PlanetFinance and Activists for Social Alternatives (ASA). The projects help alleviate poverty and provide long-term security in communities where life and house insurance were previously unavailable, or unaffordable.
Demographic Change
Mondial Assistance offers services to seniors to support them with employment assistance, crisis management and in-kind compensation.
Sustainable Development Advisory Services
Allianz provides numerous consulting and advisory services, ranging from carbon emissions trading to long-term financial planning. Allianz Germany offers technical advisory services from financing to installation of renewable energy equipment (wind, photovoltaic, biogas and biomass).
