The Team
The AT&T Williams team, which was formed and run by Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
This record breaking team first competed in 1978 at the Argentine GP and has gone on to score 113 Grand Prix victories.
The team base is in Grove, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. Five hundred and twelve people work there to assure that the racing cars perform well and that all latest developments are tested and integrated in the new cars.
Since their debut, the team has won nine World Constructors Championships. Australian racer Alan Jones won the first of seven World Driver Championships in 1980. Legends like Keke Rosberg (1982), Nelson Piquet (1987), Nigel Mansell (1992), Alain Prost (1993), Damon Hill (1996) and Jacques Villeneuve (1997) successfully represented this great legacy.
Frank Williams
Frank Williams was born on April 16, 1942 in Jarrow, County Durham, England, to an RAF officer and a special education teacher.
He made his racing debut in 1961 driving an Austin A40 saloon, thereafter progressing to F3 racing both as a mechanic and driver. In 1967 he decided that his future was not in driving and built his first Motorsport team: Frank Williams Racing Cars.
Due to the lack of money and success, he merged with the oil magnate Walter Wolf in 1976.
Desiring independence again, Williams left the team in 1977 together with the engineer Patrick Head to build up a new team: Williams Grand Prix Engineering, now known as AT&T Williams. In March 1986 the team was on a high but Frank Williams was to face the most serious challenge of his life. While returning to the airport at Nice, he was involved in a car accident which was to leave him paralysed and confined to a wheelchair.
In 1999 he was knighted by the Queen. Frank Williams is also one of the few non-Frenchmen to have been made a Chevalier of France's Legion d'Honneur.
The Drivers
During the 2008 season the AT&T Williams drivers are Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima, with Nico Hülkenberg as a test driver.
Nico Rosberg
Now in his third season as a driver for AT&T Williams, Nico Rosberg has been able to swing the focus of attention from "son of former world champion" to "a very exciting prospect in Formula One". From that extraordinary debut in Bahrain back in 2006, to the innate speed shown in the 2007 season, he has demonstrated the ability to become a real star of the future.
