Leading aid agency CARE International and Allianz are offering a new type of community health insurance in an area of southern India badly hit by the 2004 tsunami.

CARE has teamed up with leading insurance company Allianz to provide insurance to 200,000 of India’s poorest households. RN Mohanty, CARE’s Tsunami Response Program director in Chennai (India), tells us how it works.

Allianz companies and their employees donated over three million euros to the relief and reconstruction efforts in the areas hit by the tsunami. A main focus of this support from Allianz is the reconstruction of a microfinance system in Aceh.

Allianz is currently working with international help organizations to explore how insurance companies can contribute to reducing poverty by offering low premium protection in Asia.
